Reading

We use The Open Court reading & writing program. The book is divided into units; and at the end of each unit, we have strategies and unit test. I will also have an oral and written quiz after each story. The quizzes are in addition to the unit tests.

Expectations: The students will be asked to read orally and silently. I will expect the students to read for comprehension as well as enjoyment. They need to read nightly at least 4 times. During SSR time students will be asked to do book reports by reading and summarizing each chapter.

Vocabulary: A vocabulary list is included with reading. The words on the list will be found in each of the stories. I will give the students words from the list, which they will need to look up the definitions, write, and memorize them. It is very important to learn the definitions as well as the pronunciation. These words will be tested at the end of each unit on a strategies test. I will let the students know in advance when the test will be given so they are able to prepare for it.

Spelling

A spelling list will be given each week. Students need to study the words everyday, spelling test will be given on Fridays.

Math

Mrs. Tseng is our Math Teacher.

Students will have a timed test every day (2 minute test consisting of 50 problems). It is very important to practice the flashcards for the timed tests and for the story problems later on. Currently we are working on additions, and by the end of the school year we hope to be working on multiplication.

Language

We use The Open Court workbook.  Students will learn about nouns, complete and incomplete sentences, and parts of speech.

Handwriting

We have started to work on our writing book in which we practice manuscript everyday. By the end of the school year we’ll be practicing cursive writing.

Phonics

This is a review with new rules and critical thinking and again we follow the Open Court Phonics and the Modern Curriculum Press.

Social Studies

We will start the year with Geography, learning about oceans, continents, directions and hemispheres as well as how to read a map. Later on we’ll be learning about climates around the United States.

Classroom Expectations: The students are expected to listen actively, participate in any class discussions and complete given assignments to the best of their ability using neat and clean handwriting. We have 15-20 minutes to check homework and do corrections in the morning, so please make sure your child arrives no later than 8:45am. If a student arrives late, I am unable to check homework and he/she is not able to complete corrections during this time. The child will have to spend part of their recess finishing his/her work.

Homework Expectations: The students are expected to use neat and proper handwriting for all assignments. Incomplete and “No Name” homework will be given a “LATE”.

If you have any questions please contact me at 510 785-2477 extension 201.
