LOOKING AHEAD. . . .

SCHOOL BARBECUE & PARENTS’ CLUB MEETING: This year our

“Getting Acquainted” barbecue will be held on Saturday, September 11

on the lawn area of the church beginning at 12:00 p.m.  Childcare

will be provided for preschool children through fourth grades.

Teachers have planned carnival-like activities to keep students

entertained while parents are in the meeting.  There will be face

painting, bean bag toss, ring toss, and more! Lend your support

to our Parents Club.  We look forward to seeing you!

OUR FIRST FUNDRAISER:  Back by popular demand will be the

gift wrap/cookie dough fundraiser!  We will kick off our first fundraiser this

week and get a jump on the competition!  We will have a school assembly

this Friday, August 27, 2010, and catalogs will be sent home with students!

PARENTS INFORMATION NIGHT:  All teachers, preschool through

fourth grade, feel very strongly that your attendance at this PARENT

ONLY evening is extremely important!  An informed, interested

parent is invaluable in supporting the goals of the teacher.  ATTENDANCE

IS MANDATORY for at least one parent, preferably both.  Mark your

calendar and reserve this all-important date!

K- 4:  Thursday, September 2 at 7:00 PM in chapel

                        school dismissed at 12 noon

Daycare in the PM for full-time kindergartners only!

PRESCHOOL:  Wednesday, September 8 at 7:00 PM in the chapel!

Unfortunately, we are NOT able to offer childcare for these two evenings,

and by giving you the dates well in advance, this should allow ample time

for you to make childcare arrangements on these evenings.

SCHOOL PHOTOS:  Picture Day is scheduled for Friday, September 10,

2010.  School will be dismissed at noontime on this day, as teachers

will be using the afternoon to prepare for the Parents’ Club

Getting Acquainted Barbecue.

DISASTER DISMISSAL DRILL:  This year, the evacuation dismissal drill is scheduled for Friday, September 24.  There will be information given at the September 11 “Getting Acquainted Barbecue.”  This is a very important drill in which ALL students are expected and need to participate.  Students will only be released to the names designated on the emergency cards.  Once students are released, they will be dismissed for the remainder of that day.  Teachers will use the afternoon to make assessments of the drill and make improvements where needed.

RETURNING STUDENTS’ EMERGENCY BACKPACKS will be sent home

on Friday, August 27.  Please replenish food items which may have

expired.  New students will need to purchase backpacks and supplies.

An emergency supply list of items needed is attached.  The e

emergency backpacks should be returned on Tuesday, August 31.

NEWSLETTERS:  BE A WELL-INFORMED PARENT!  READ

YOUR NEWSLETTER!  Important information will be sent home through

the oldest child.  Post the calendar and keep the newsletter handy for

easy reference during the course of the month.  Please initial the envelope

to show that you have received the newsletter and return the envelope to

school immediately.  We do not use this system for preschoolers or for

notes from your child’s teacher.  Make it a habit to check and clear your

child’s special folder every evening for homework, corrected papers,

art projects, and other important matters.

TUITION BOX (K-4):  The tuition box is near the back door of the third

/fourth grade room.  Remember, the deadline for tuition each month is the

 5th of the month.

ABSENCES:  Please call the school if your child is going to be absent.  Upon your child’s return, we will need a note as to the reason for the absence and the date(s) involved.

MEDICATION:  We will give a child medication during the lunch hour if it is prescribed by a physician and a written note is on file as to dosage and time.  Your child’s teacher has forms available.  We cannot give your child aspirin or nonprescription drugs.

·    If your child has a fever or has vomited, do NOT send him/her back to school unless 24 hours have passed without any sign of these  symptoms.  Do NOT send any type of medication in BACKPACKS or LUNCHBOXES. Make certain your EMERGENCY CARD has someone listed who can pick your sick child up immediately.

STUDENT ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES:

K – 4 STUDENTS MUST BE AT SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 8:45 AM.  Those students arriving AFTER 8:45 a.m. will be considered tardy.  Children who are not participating in our extended-care program are to arrive no earlier than 8: 30 AM and are to be picked up by 3:45 pm.

EARLY DISMISSAL, FRIDAYS, K- 4:  We show a video every Friday from

3:00-3:30 PM.  You may pick up your child at 3:00 p.m.  Please make sure

you sign out.

Preschool children are to be at school by 9:00 AM.  Those who are not participating in our daycare program are to arrive no earlier than 8:45 a.m. and are to be picked up by 12:15 PM.

EXTENDED CARE:  Normal hours of care begin at 7:00 a.m. and end at

6:00 p.m. each day.  If you find AM-extended care closed, please take your child to the opposite side of the campus for care.

After 5:30 PM the K-4 children will need to be picked up on the grass        area or preschool. This procedure is a safety precaution which enables the daycare teachers to accompany one another in locking up and leaving the campus.  If it is raining, the K-4 children will stay in the 3rd/4th classroom.

YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN AN EMERGENCY MAY ARISE, AND YOU

FIND YOURSELF UNABLE TO PICK YOUR CHILD UP BY 6:00 P.M.

PLEASE HAVE SEVERAL PEOPLE LISTED ON THE EMERGENCY

CARD WHO WE CAN CALL.  PARENTS OF OTHER STUDENTS COULD

BE A GOOD RESOURCE.

Please be aware that children who are on campus earlier or later than the times indicated will be placed automatically into the extended care program.  Unless your child is signed up for our daycare program, you will be expected to pay the fee on the day of use.  For your child’s safety ALWAYS accompany your child across the parking lot.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN IS MOST IMPORTANT!  DRIVE SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY AND PARK ONLY WHERE PARKING IS PERMITTED.  PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION AS YOU ENTER ADRIAN FROM THE CHURCH DRIVEWAY.

PARENT WORK DAY:  Save Saturday, October 9 from 9 a.m. – noon to help us spruce up the environment in which your child spends so much time.  There is always much to do!

Recycling:  Earlier this year, our school received a “2010 Environmental Achievement Award” from the City of Hayward for our efforts to cut back on waste that goes into the landfills and to help eliminate global warming.  Once again the teachers are seeking your support when sending lunches to school with your child(dren).  Send reusable containers such as Ziploc/Tupperware and metal utensils rather than plastic ones.  At school when students bring plastic forks/spoons or use school supplied ones, they will be taught to wipe them off and bring them home for washing.  Re-use plastic forks/spoons instead of throwing them away.  We will also have students wipe out fruit cup containers to place in the recycling bin at home.  These are just small changes that can have a huge impact on the earth!  Students who are consistent in their efforts will join the “Green Lunch” club!

FITNESS:  Kid Fitness is taught by Stacie Ranalli who has a B.A. in Early Childhood Education and has held classes at the preschool and primary grade levels.  Kid Fitness offers age-appropriate fitness and recreational activities.  Classes will be held on Thursdays starting on September 9.  There are six classes per session. The cost is only $48.  After “exercising” the brain all day, here’s a great way to exercise the body as well!  Please see the pamphlet which was sent home in newsletter envelope.

HEALTHY SCHOOL ACT requires the school to notify parents of any area treated with pesticides inside the building and on school grounds.  During the course of the year the following pesticides may be used:  insect spray containing bifenthrin, ant spray containing permethrin, pyrethrins, and piperohyl butoxide technical, and wasp spray containing prallethrin, and lambada cyhalothrin.   It is the goal of the school to provide for the safest and lowest risk approach to control pest problems while protecting students, staff, and the environment.

K-4 GRADES REFRIGERATOR:  We are still in need of a refrigerator for the primary grades.  Teachers’ luncheons, daycare snacks, and party treats are kept in the refrigerator.  If you know of someone upgrading, please let them know that we could use their refrigerator.  The donation will be a tax write off.

UNIFORMS, K- 4:  We have tried to make the dress code policy as clear

as possible to avoid misunderstandings.   Please follow the policy

carefully.  Remember that the purpose of uniforms is to be uniform.  Avoid

being creative and dressing up the uniform with trims and other decorations.

PANTS:  Cargo/carpenter-styled pants are NOT allowed!  An easy

way to recognize these two styles are the pockets along the front and/or

sides of the pants.

BOYS’ SHORTS:  Boys’ shorts should NOT come below the knees.  The

dress code specifies WALKING SHORTS, which are not baggy, long,

nor do they have pockets on the legs.

TRUE REDS ONLY:  When purchasing polo-styled shirts, please be aware

that there are different shades of red being sold which include the colors

brick red or maroon (purplish red).  These two colors are not a “true red”

and NOT ALLOWED.  LABEL ALL OUTERWEAR WITH A LAUNDRY

MARKER.  The best place is not on the label but on the inside of the

ribbing,as labels can be cut or torn.  We often end up with unclaimed

sweatshirts and sweaters.

Necklaces and hoop/loop-styled ear rings can be a hazard on the

playground and CANNOT be worn.  No hats or scarves will be allowed in the

classroom.  Make sure your child has shoes that are safe for running

and playing!  Shoes with thick soles and/or heels are NOT practical and

invite the possibility of twisted ankles.  Socks need to be the CREW

STYLE, NOT the low-cut/ankle variety.

BODY TATTOOS AND FINGER NAILPOLISH:  Teachers have found

that tattoos on faces, hands, or arms are highly distracting to students.

This includes girls being preoccupied with their nail polish.   We ask that you

help to keep your student focused by not allowing him/her to wear tattoos

or fingernail polish.   Please be aware that we have incorporated this policy

into the handbook.

If a child does not come to school in uniform, we will use the

following procedure:

·    Change the child into the appropriate uniform (if in stock)

·    If we do not have the appropriate uniform available, the child will

play indoors at recess times.  This is not a punitive measure but a

practical one as it helps to avoid confusion among

parents/students regarding the dress code.  Dress code

problems occur when children and parents see an article of clothing

on a child on the playground and think it is acceptable.

WE AT LEA’S HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH A WONDERFUL GROUP OF STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND TEACHERS!  WORKING HAND-IN-HAND, WE WILL HAVE A SUCCESSFUL YEAR.  PLEASE COMMUNICATE WITH US OFTEN.  WE WELCOME YOUR INPUT!

May the Lord continue to bless us according to His goodness and mercy!
