"KINDERGARTEN LAND" REPORT
The kindergarten class has learned so much since our last meeting
in February and have had a great time with the many activities
planned. It was so much fun watching the kindergartners, unbeknownst
to them, happily passing out their Valentine’s Day cards
while getting in extra reading practice as they read each other’s
names and placed cards in each others holders.
Our pretend sleepover party last week was a huge success! The
kindergartners wore their pajama tops to school, brought their
sleeping bags/blankets, a stuffed toy friend, and pillows. Along
with our big buddies, we “camped” out on the floor
and watched “Winnie the Pooh in the Honey Tree.” They
ate a variety of chips and had juice or soda to drink. Papers
and pictures on display
SOCIAL STUDIES: We have learned about famous African Americans
such as George Washington Carver, Thurgood Marshall, Mae Jamison,
Gwendolyn Brooks, and Ralph Bunche. We have learned more about
our first president, George Washington, and with Mrs. Jackel,
cleaned pennies with the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, on it
during a science experiment.
CALIFORNIA ANIMALS: The kindergartners are about animals that
are native to California during Science with Mrs. Jackel; learning
vocabulary such as camouflage, prey, predator, nocturnal, hibernation,
and more. A naturalist from Sulphur Creek Nature Center brought
animals to visit our class yesterday morning; a turkey vulture,
a newt, a Rosie Boa, and an opossum. Through a variety of literature,
the kindergartners have and will be learning many interesting
facts about animals and how they survive in their environment.
To end this unit in a fun-artistic manner, the kindergartners
will create animal habitat dioramas. We’ll invite and share
our dioramas with the Lion Cub class and the first through fourth
grade students.
PRECORDERS: The kindergartners will have their first precorder
lesson next week. They will learn the correct hand position when
holding the precorders and how to “toot” gently into
it. Shortly, students will learn to identify the following musical
notes: a quarter, half, and whole note. They will also learn how
many beats each of these notes receive. I will send the precorders
home with the students so that parents may enjoy this part of
our curriculum as well. J
The month of March has roared in like a lion and has helped our
investigation of the simile, “March comes in like a lion
and leaves out like a lamb” immensely! We’ll read
books about the wind, write a paper in Language Arts about fun
activities to do on windy days, and keep a class chart on windy
weather for the month. The kindergartners will do a fun “huffing
and puffing” experiment with Mrs. Jackel based on the wind;
and if the weather is not too blustery, the kindergartners will
play with a parachute during P.E.
Have a great week!
Yours truly,
Melva Bland
